  • Cybersecurity testing Power Grids with HYPERSIM
Cyberphysical co-simulation of an IEEE 2030.7-compliant microgrid connected to a real hardware controller is run on HYPERSIM. Cyberattacks including unintentional islanding shows the power of real-time Hardware-in-the-Loop systems for testing and training...

  • This demonstration co-simulates a grid-connected Microgrid with industrial communications networks in Real-Time. A real SEL Microgrid Controller is connected to a high fidelity model of an IEEE 2030.7-compliant microgrid, including distributed energy resources (DERs), power converters, loads, and using IEC 61850, for Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing. Both the real Microgrid Controller and simulated microgrid componentns are subjected to cyberattacks including unintentional islanding and frequency control interruption. This cyberphysical co-simulation shows the full value of Real-Time HIL Simulation to test control and protection equipment, validate protection schemes, and conduct operator training under realistic conditions and scenarios.

This demo uses our full Real-Time Hardware-in-the-Loop for Power Systems product suite:

The microgrid is a standard IEEE 2030.7 compliant model based on the NREL's GHOST microgrid, built and simulated with our Power Systems Software platform, HYPERSIM® and uses IEC 61850 messaging. Based on three decades of development with some of the World's leading power utilities, HYPERSIM gives engineers the tools to tackle the challenges of the modern power grid by providing a range of solvers, toolboxes and communications protocols specifically tailored to match the strictest performance and accuracy requirements in an extensive range of applications. With its efficient signal processing and powerful test automation capabilities, HYPERSIM helps engineers to model their power network and run accelerated simulations on their PC before going to real-time for large-scale Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing.

eXata, by Keysight Technologies, is a high-fidelity communications network emulator integrated with HYPERSIM®. Using eXata, command and measurement signals between the controller and microgrid are subjected to cyberattacks causing unexpected behavior within the system, while also emulating the rest of the network comunications system.

The co-simulation is run on our latest Real-Time Simulator, the OP5033XG. The OP5033XG provides an ideal platform for real-time cybersecurity applications, in which network protocols such as C37.118 and IEC61850 are required for hardware integration, as well as for users simply wishing to accelerate their offline simulations using OPAL-RT’s parallel processing technology. Based on Intel® Xeon® with up to 44-cores, the OP5033XG simulator serves as an ideal master system for configurations requiring FPGA and I/O expansion units.
