Gilkes Hydro offer single source solutions for a range of hydropower turbines, providing efficient, clean, renewable energy. Our range of Francis, Turgo & Pelton Turbines cover medium to high head projects capable of generating up to 30MW per unit. Having manufactured over 6800 turbines, Gilkes offers complete water to wire solutions for small hydroelectric developments, as well as full plant modernization & optimization services.

Gilkes began operations in North America in 1978, with a facility in Texas supporting the pumps and hydro markets. Since then, Gilkes have supplied over 160 turbines to the hydro market in North America, with 250MW of installed power. Gilkes Inc also operate a major remanufacturing programme for the power & engine markets from the facility in Kemah, Texas.

With over 160 years of experience our water to wire solutions fit a range of hydropower applications. From large utilities to small mini grids, our solutions are tailored to meet the needs of each individual project.

 Products

  • Turgo Turbines
For over 100 years the Turgo has maintained its place as one of the most popular hydropower turbine designs, testament to the longevity of the original Gilkes design and technology....

  • Gilkes are the original designers of the Turgo Impulse Turbine. Designed in 1919 by the Grandfather of Gilkes current Chairman, the Turgo concept was a side entry impulse turbine which would run, typically, at twice the speed of a Pelton turbine when operating on the same head.  With a power output of up to 10MW and a head range of 100-300 Mtrs the Turgo is available as horizontal, single and twin jet designs.

In todays market the Turgo is ideally suited to Run of River, Rural Electrification and Energy Recovery Porjects.

    Advantages of the Turgo

    • Covers the boundary between Francis and Pelton
    • Limits Over-Pressure Effect over the penstock
    • Higher speed = weight and cost reduction
    • Maintains efficiency over a wide flow range
    • Superior abrasion resistance
    • Ease of operation and maintenance

  • Pelton Turbine
The Pelton is an impulse water turbine invented by Lester Allan Pelton in the 1870s. Peltons are the preferred turbine for hydropower where the available water source has relatively high head at low flow rates....

  • Gilkes manufacture Pelton turbines with a power output up to 20MW, with a head range of 100 - 1000 Mtrs.   Horizontal arrangement come in single and twin jet designs and vertical arrangements with p to 6 jets.

Pelton runners can be offered fully machined from a single forged block or as a casting solution.

    Advantages of the Pelton

    • Minimum wear
    • No cavitation damage
    • Limits Over-Pressure Effect over the penstock
    • Speed load control
    • High efficiency over wide flow range
  • Francis Turbines
The Francis turbine, developed by James B Francis in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1849 is the most common water turbine in use today. Francis are the preferred turbine for hydro-power where the available water source has medium head and flow rates....

  • Gilkes Francis Turbines are available as either horizontal or vertical units, with a power output of up to 20MW and a head range or 30-400 Mtrs

Gilkes Francis model range includes 8 different specific speed designs. The Hydro team at Gilkes can advise on the best solution for your project.

    Advantages of the Francis

    • High efficiency
    • Suitable for a wide range of applications
    • Compact construction
    • Covers a wide head range
  • Hydro Plant Modernization
Gilkes turbines have an unparalleled life span. However, at some point during the life of a hydro scheme, there will undoubtedly come a time where plant modernisation will be required and certain aspects will have to be replaced, refurbished or upgraded....

  • Gilkes have a great deal of experience from single part replacement or upgrade to fully rehabilitating whole hydro installations back to their optimum working levels.

Modernization can improve the overall efficiency of your scheme. Increased generation and reduced downtime can provide improved annual energy production due to higher reliability and lower operator dependence.

Optimizing components with updated technology can help you meet changing compliance regulations and offer plant safety improvement.

  • Energy Recovery
Energy recovery in the context of hydropower is the extraction of the potential energy of flowing water from a pressurized water source.

Gilkes offers solutions whereby the potential energy that was once destroyed can be utilized for power production.
    ...

  • Gilkes has a range of turbines that can be optimized to a specific site to harness the potential energy of the water and turn it into electricity, utilizing either a reaction or impulse style of turbine. Where downstream pressure is required, or a turbine is fitted within a pressurized system, a Francis (reaction) turbine is the preferred choice. If the turbine can discharge to atmosphere, then a Gilkes Turgo or Pelton turbine can be installed. The Gilkes Turgo is ideally suited to and is often installed at the head of a water treatment facility where it can be utilized to control flow through the facility as well as generate power at the same time.

The electrical power that is produced by our turbines can be used in several different ways.

    • The electricity can be used to power a water treatment/wastewater treatment facility to offset their annual energy consumption in a ‘behind the meter’ application
    • The electricity can be sold directly in the grid with the means of a power purchase agreement
    • If more power is produced than can be consumed, a combination of behind the meter and export to the grid can be achieved
    • High Efficiency and Reliability

  • N-Series
Gilkes energy recovery turbine (N-Series) is designed to be utilized where downstream pressure requirement is either mandated, critical, or desired. This reaction-style turbine delivers unsurpassed performance at the highest efficiencies....

  • The N-Series compact and modular design, direct coupled induction motor, electric wicket gate actuation and control panel option makes this skid mounted unit a true plug and play product.

    LOWER TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP

    • Better system efficiency than PAT's (pump as turbine)
    • Greater financial return
    • Optimised performance across wider flow range
    • Simplified infrastructure
    • Modular plug and play
    • Reduced space requirement
    • Reduction in operation & maintenance cost
