  • Efficient fine screening is essential to protect pumps, condenser tubes, heat exchangers and other critical equipment, and is the last cleaning stage in the water intake process.

    Geiger MultiDisc Traveling Water Screens belong to the family of automatic Filtration Machines/Travelling Band Screens (10mm to 200 µm mesh size). The Geiger MultiDisc has already been installed in over 200 intake channels worldwide on new and existing (brownfield) installations to successfully replace dual-flow and through-flow band screens; thus protecting condenser tubes and membrane plants against carry-over of debris and providing a better heat-rate.

    The installation as a plug-in is very time and cost saving, since the Geiger MultiDisc is supplied in a self-supporting frame.   • As the last cleaning stage for water intakes, finest screening/filtration is of particular importance to protect downstream equipment such as pumps and condensers reliably against clogging.

    Geiger and Passavant Centre-Flow (In-to-Out) Travelling Band Screens are the well proven design variant of conventional Travelling Band Screens for minimized life cycle costs and the most efficient extraction of fine debris. Many of our machines have been running successfully at sites for over 40 years on seawater and river water applications.

    Compared to Dual-Flow band screens (out-to-in flow pattern), our Centre-Flow band screens avoid the accumulation of debris under the machines, which would be difficult to remove from the bottom of a channel.
    The spraying of the panels takes place automatically at the upper part and is following the natural gravity direction, thus minimizing water leakages to the operational deck.

    Depending on site requirements, the mesh panels are either flat or roof/half-round shaped. With roof or half-round-shaped mesh panels a higher efficiency of the machine size can be achieved, and bigger particles cannot drop back so easily. Special features are the maintenance-free side bar chains to guide the mesh panels, a highly efficient, scale- like sealing between the screening elements, chain and curved guiding’s as well as the chain track on the clean water side. The adjustable band speed allows optimum adaptation of the flow rate and screen washing. Excellent cleaning of the mesh panels is achieved by means of an intense washing; the wash water system is adjustable and controllable via local/remote control. A nozzle cleaning device with automatic control is available as an option. The chain tension can be adjusted from the operating floor level. For sea water applications, the chains and chain guidings should be protected against corrosion by means of efficient special anodes forming part of our long proven and project-tailored cathodic corrosion protection system with impressed current.

    Travelling Band Screens/Traveling Water Screens can also be equipped with fish buckets to help protect aquatic life. Our travelling water screens with the patented fish bucket system are EPA 316b-compliant as the best available technology (BAT) to reduce impingement. The fish are gently removed separately from the debris by lower pressure jets and from a lower height into a separate trough for the return into the water bodies. Due to the special coating of our fish buckets and a special hydraulic form, fish are prevented from sticking to the metal as well as from jumping out of the buckets during the uplift.

    Fish return troughs and debris troughs can be independent or combined based on customers’ requirements.

    Johnson Passive Intake Systems reliably combine low-maintenance Offshore Water Intake Screens with automated cleaning via pressurized air. The system consists of two parts: the original Johnson Screens® Passive Water Intake Screen and the Hydroburst™ air powered cleaning unit. Both parts are delivered as an easy to install “plug-and-play” system.

    Johnson Screens® are used as offshore screens for deep water intake systems and provide an environmental friendly and safe solution. With regards to site requirements, we provide the best suitable model from our portfolio of the three Johnson® screen types:

    Our products can be manufactured in multiple diameters, slot sizes and end caps and can be adapted to suit various environmental conditions and requirements. They comprise a cylindrically-shaped shell made of continuous Vee-wire®which ensures minimized plugging.

    To ensure a reliable and comfortable intake of water, the Hydroburst™ is the essential add-on for Johnson Passive Water Intake Screens. With regards to screen size, depth and distance to the shore, we will design a suitable Hydroburst™ model, removing debris from the outer surface of the screen and hence ensuring the continuous proper screening operation. Pressurized air backwashes debris which has accumulated on the outer surface of the screen. The natural water current around the screen prevents the particles from settling on the screen again. Therefore, even and especially if the water has a high debris rate, the Hydroburst™ automatic cleaning system of Johnson Passive Intake Systems enables reliable and comfortable operation.

    The Hydroburst™ consists of four main components completely mouted on a skid:

    1. The air receiver which stores the pressurized air so that the air can be released whenever cleaning is necessary.
    2. One or two compressors (redundant use) filling the air receiver directly after a backwash cycle.
    3. A suitable number of automatic air valves releasing the aire to the Screens in automatic or manual was, and
    4. A PLC system which managages and controls all mentioned services.
