WHAT IT DOES
The SPC4™ Load Indicating System allows users to constantly monitor the clamp load of any SPC4 bolted joint, whether static or dynamic. This fastener improves the ability of the tightening tool and user to accurately install and monitor tension. The SPC4 system reduces the inaccuracies of bolting methods by enabling users to install a bolted joint within +/-5% accuracy of the required preload or clamp load. This sytem offers maximum joint integrity with optimum performance across many industrial applications.
HOW IT WORKS
The SPC4 Load Indicating System includes a standard or custom fastener manufactured or retrofitted to specific customer requirements. The fastener is then modified with a datum disc compatible to any Valley Forge supplied reader with analog, digital or WiFi output. Existing tightening tools and methods are used to install the SPC4 fastener, with the ability to read and monitor clamp load by easily attaching the probe from the universal reader to the datum disc.
The system is designed and manufactured under strict quality requirements and is compliant with ASTM F-2482. This requires a fastener capable of indicating clamping forces up to yield strength during the tightening process or post installation residual tension, or both and must have +/- 5% accuracy.

In many industrial applications, most bolted joint failures occur due to improper installation when trying to achieve the required clamp load. There are many factors that attribute to bolted joint failures which may not be visible during installation. However, if the bolt tension could be monitored on each fastener during installation, this would not eliminate the contributing factors, but it would show which fasteners are tensioned properly and identify those that are not. Those fasteners that have not received the proper bolt tension have a direct negative impact on the clamp load and integrity of the bolted joint during operation.
